Bodyfuelz-An interview with Ryan Fernando

BODYFUELZ is India's pioneer in performance nutrition and has forayed into this field with a range of performance nutrition products based on Aminonutrition. Bio Bodyfuelz is scientifically backed by "Dr Nutrition" a Singapore based sports and fitness nutrition centre.

Recently, Takath.com was fortunate to meet Ryan Fernando, the Marketing Manager of Bio Bodyfuelz Ltd in Chennai.

[Q] Bodyfuelz products are based on something called Aminonutrition. What are its benefits?

Some of our products such as the Bodyfuelz Muscle Max and Bodyfuelz Fitnez are based on something called free form amino acids. As a food scientist and a performance nutritionist, I believe that free form amino acids are the purest form of a protein.

Now let's say I'm a regular gym goer. For me to prepare a protein shake and consume it pre workout...I will have to plan very well so that the protein is digested and reaches my muscles in time for my workout. This requires nutritional discipline.

Freeform amino acids on the other hand are absorbed within 10 minutes. All I have to do is tear open a Bodyfuelz sachet, pop the contents into water and drink it pre workout.

What are the benefits? I know my muscle is made of 60% Glutamine and 35% Branched chain amino acids (BCAA). These four amino acids make up 95% of muscle. A protein would give you all 21 amino acids. Therefore, there is considerable amino acid wastage, which is a load on the liver and kidney. With free form amino acids you could deliver a smaller quantity at a faster rate with the amino acids you really need.

The benefit is of nutritional convenience.

[Q] So when should protein shakes be consumed?

I would recommend that protein shakes are consumed post workout. Choose a good quality protein-whether it is a whey protein isolate, whey protein concentrate or soy or caesin based protein.

[Q] Could you run us through some of the Bodyfuelz products that incorporate Aminonutrition?

My personal favourite is the Bodyfuelz Muscle Max. When we developed this-we went to professional athletes, bodybuilders...and asked them "How do you work out?"

Well, the bodybuilders work out by breaking down muscle during the workout and attempt to induce hypertrophy by ensuring that their nutritional intake and rest post workout allows the muscle fibres to rebuild stronger and larger. Athletes-many put a circuit-training load on their muscle.

The process you really want happening here is Anabolism i.e. is the building of muscle or protein synthesis or positive amino acid in the blood or positive nitrogen balance.

With weight training or sports training you break down muscle fibres. These need to heal post workout. Now, they heal by the process of inserting amino acids into their local strand. This is a dynamic process-it doesn't happen all at once. The repair starts the moment the damage begins i.e. when the workout begins (called microscopic trauma).

Bodyfuelz Muscle Max helps create an anabolic environment in the muscle. By merely tearing open the sachet and consuming the contents 10 minutes before the workout, it means that when I am on the treadmill or bench pressing or squatting these free form amino acids are available in the blood for protein synthesis.

We recommend 1 to 3 sachets per workout. It depends on the individual. Sushil Kumar, who won a medal at the 2008 Olympics often takes the takes 8 packets of Bodyfuelz Muscle Max per weight training workout.  His workout intensity is far greater than the average person's of course.

Based on the same concept of aminonutrition we have two other products Bodyfuelz Fitnez and Bodyfuelz PWRSPORTS.

[Q] Why is rehydration so important for athletes? And what rehydration products does Bodyfuelz have?

At Bodyfuelz we have designed a product called Bodyfuelz fastcharge. It is a 6% osmotic delivery system. It ensures the uptake of only 6% of glucose. It is a 5: 1 electrolyte replenisher. So sodium and potassium are correctly balanced.

When we designed this product, we took a lot of science that is globally available on rehydration solutions. We looked at Gatorade, Isostar, Glucosade...we looked at some Indian formulas, we went to the Army sports research institute. They are India's premier sports science facility and they found that Indians lose more sweat than other races-certainly more than caucasions do.

Our R&D team in collaboration with Dr Nutrition came up with fastcharge. It's really simple. All you have to do is tear open the sachet and mix it with 500ml of water.

[Q] What is the difference between sports drinks and energy drinks?

[Q] What is your take on fat burners?

Well, I don't need fat burners because I'm skinny!

But my take on fat burners is try and avoid them if you can. Try and lose fat over a longer period of time-you won't have to use fat burners then. But if your profession demands it and if have a very short time frame then there are certain fat burners which I do recommend.

Fat burners are broadly classified into thermogenic fat burners and hormonal fat burners. Thermogenic works by increasing metabolism. Hormonal work by stimulating certain hormones in the body such as adrenalin-which in turn causes a surge in metabolism. A faster metabolism will result in greater consumption of calories.

Now, there are certainly unsafe fat burners out there. They are good at the task of fat burning but they come with side effects. Side effects can be kidney failure; liver damage...and also fat burners work differently for each individual. I have observed individuals who did not lose any fat with these fat burners.

On the other hand, there are extremely safe fat burners which myself recommend. L Carnitine, Green tea extract and some herbs that are found in Ayurvedic medicine.

However, if you don't get off your couch you won't lose any fat.

Thank you Ryan, for your time.

 You're welcome
